To add fractions you need a common denominator. When the bottoms already match, you simply add the numerators. When they differ, you find the least common denominator (LCD), rewrite both fractions over it, then add.

FractionSteps shows each of these stages with the actual numbers, plus visual bars so you can see why the pieces line up.

    Worked examples

    1/3 + 1/4
    = 7/12
    2/5 + 1/5
    = 3/5
    1/2 + 1/6
    = 2/3
    3/8 + 1/4
    = 5/8

    Frequently asked

How do you add fractions with different denominators?

Find the least common denominator of the two fractions, rewrite each fraction over that denominator, add the numerators, then simplify the result if possible.

Do I need to simplify the answer?

It is good practice. FractionSteps automatically reduces the result to lowest terms and shows you the step where it divides the top and bottom by their greatest common factor.

    Can I add mixed numbers?

Yes. Type a mixed number such as 1 1/2 into either input and the calculator converts it to an improper fraction before adding.
