How to Convert a Percent to a Decimal
Switching between percents and decimals is just moving the decimal point two places.
Switching between percents and decimals is just moving the decimal point two places.
Percent to decimal: divide by 100
To convert a percent to a decimal, divide by 100 — which is the same as moving the decimal point two places to the left. 75% becomes 0.75, and 8% becomes 0.08.
Decimal to percent: multiply by 100
Going the other way, multiply the decimal by 100 (move the point two places right) and add a percent sign. 0.6 becomes 60%, and 0.125 becomes 12.5%.
Watch the leading zeros
For small percents, keep the place value. 5% is 0.05, not 0.5 — moving two places means adding a zero.
Percents over 100
150% becomes 1.5, since dividing 150 by 100 gives 1.5.
