How to Convert Fractions to Decimals

A fraction is just a division waiting to happen — divide the top by the bottom to get its decimal.

Every fraction is a division problem in disguise. To turn a fraction into a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.

Step by step

  1. 1
    Set up the division
    The fraction 3/8 means 3 ÷ 8.
  2. 2
    Divide
    Carry out the division: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375.
  3. 3
    Note repeating decimals
Some fractions, like 1/3, give a repeating decimal (0.333...). Mark the repeating part.

Worked example

Convert 3/8 to a decimal. Divide 3 by 8: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. So 3/8 = 0.375.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Dividing the denominator by the numerator instead of the other way around.
  • Rounding a repeating decimal without noting that it repeats.
  • Misplacing the decimal point.
