How to Convert Fractions to Decimals
A fraction is just a division waiting to happen — divide the top by the bottom to get its decimal.
Every fraction is a division problem in disguise. To turn a fraction into a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.
Step by step
- 1Set up the division
The fraction 3/8 means 3 ÷ 8. - 2Divide
Carry out the division: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. - 3Note repeating decimals
Some fractions, like 1/3, give a repeating decimal (0.333...). Mark the repeating part.
Worked example
Convert 3/8 to a decimal. Divide 3 by 8: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. So 3/8 = 0.375.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Dividing the denominator by the numerator instead of the other way around.
- Rounding a repeating decimal without noting that it repeats.
- Misplacing the decimal point.
