How to Divide Mixed Numbers
Dividing mixed numbers combines two skills: convert to improper fractions, then keep, change, flip.
To divide mixed numbers, first convert each to an improper fraction. Then divide as you would any fractions: keep the first, change division to multiplication, and flip the second.
Step by step
- 1Convert to improper fractions
2 1/2 becomes 5/2, and 1 1/4 becomes 5/4. - 2Keep, change, flip
Keep 5/2, change ÷ to x, and flip 5/4 to 4/5. - 3Multiply straight across
5/2 x 4/5 = 20/10. - 4Simplify and convert back
20/10 = 2.
Worked example
Divide 2 1/2 ÷ 1 1/4. Convert: 5/2 ÷ 5/4. Keep-change-flip: 5/2 x 4/5 = 20/10 = 2.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Flipping the first fraction instead of the second.
- Forgetting to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions first.
- Not simplifying the final answer.
