How to Multiply Mixed Numbers
To multiply mixed numbers, turn them into improper fractions first — then it's just multiply across.
You cannot multiply mixed numbers directly. Convert each to an improper fraction, multiply the numerators and denominators straight across, then simplify and convert back to a mixed number.
Step by step
- 1Convert to improper fractions
2 1/2 becomes 5/2, and 1 1/3 becomes 4/3. - 2Multiply straight across
Multiply numerators and denominators: 5 x 4 = 20, and 2 x 3 = 6, giving 20/6. - 3Simplify
20/6 simplifies to 10/3. - 4Convert back to a mixed number
10/3 is 3 1/3.
Worked example
Multiply 2 1/2 x 1 1/3. Convert: 5/2 x 4/3 = 20/6 = 10/3 = 3 1/3.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Multiplying the whole numbers and fractions separately (this does not work).
- Forgetting to convert to improper fractions first.
- Not simplifying or converting the answer back to a mixed number.

Frequently asked
How do you multiply mixed numbers?
Convert each mixed number to an improper fraction, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then simplify and convert back.
Why can't you just multiply the whole numbers and fractions separately?
Because that ignores the cross-products. Converting to improper fractions captures the full value of each mixed number.
What is 2 1/2 x 1 1/3?
Converting gives 5/2 x 4/3 = 20/6 = 10/3, which is 3 1/3.
